Two Folding Bikes, One Pizza and a Night Under the Wing

Every flight ends on a runway. But the journey rarely does.

In our previous articles we talked about speed, fuel flow and the sweet spot of the ROTAX 916 iS. We talked about how quickly Europe can shrink beneath the wings. This time we want to talk about something the numbers never show.

What happens after the engine stops?

Arriving in Bovec

Late afternoon. The Soča valley opens up ahead, turquoise water glittering between the peaks of the Julian Alps. We join the circuit, the grass runway slides under the nose, and a few minutes later the propeller stops turning.

Silence. Warm air. The smell of cut grass and pine.

The flight took far less time than the drive would have. The aircraft is tied down. The evening is ours. And there is only one question left: where do we get a good pizza?

The Last Kilometre

Bovec is one of the friendlier airfields in the Alps. The town is close. Close enough to walk, in theory. But after a flight, with the evening light fading, nobody really feels like walking there and back again in the dark.

Most airfields are further away. A taxi that never arrives. A bus that ran an hour ago. A long walk along a road with no pavement. This is the part of general aviation nobody puts in the brochure.

An aircraft can take you hundreds of kilometres in a couple of hours. The last kilometre is often the hardest one.

Two Bikes in the Back

So we open the baggage compartment and take out two Brompton folding bikes.

It still feels a little like a magic trick. Two small, neat packages come out of the aircraft, and within a minute they have become two proper bicycles. No roof rack. No bike box. No compromises on the rest of the luggage.

It works because two clever designs meet. The Brompton folds into something about the size of a carry-on bag. The Ellipse Spirit offers a generous baggage compartment that was designed for real travelling, not just for a headset and a jacket.

Pizza with a View

A few minutes of easy pedalling and we are in town. Past the church, past the outdoor shops, past the rafting guides washing their wetsuits at the end of the day.

We find a table on a terrace. The bikes stand folded next to the chairs, no lock needed. The pizza arrives, the mountains turn orange, then pink, then grey.

Two hours ago we were at home. It feels like days.

Riding Back at Dusk

The ride back to the airfield is the moment we remember most. Cool air coming down from the mountains. The river somewhere in the dark to our left. A small front light drawing a circle on the road.

And then the aircraft, standing quietly at the edge of the grass, exactly where we left it. There is something deeply satisfying about returning to your own wings on your own two wheels.

A Night Under the Wing

Some nights we book a small apartment in town. Other nights we stay right at the airfield, with a sleeping bag, a tent or simply the wing above our heads.

The valley goes quiet. The last lights in Bovec go out. And the sky over the Julian Alps fills with more stars than you remember existed.

Mountains around you, stars above you, and your aircraft a few steps away. This is exactly why this kind of flying makes sense.

Travelling Twice

With the ROTAX 916 iS, the Ellipse Spirit covers long distances quickly and comfortably. Cruising in the sweet spot around 230 km/h TAS, a destination in the Alps becomes an easy afternoon flight.

But speed alone does not make a travel aircraft. What matters is what you can do when you arrive. With two bikes in the back, you travel twice:

• Fast – hundreds of kilometres in a few hours
• Slow – the valley, the town and the evening at the pace of a bicycle

One takes you far. The other lets you actually be there.

Why We Fly

We often measure aircraft by how fast they fly and how much they burn. Those numbers matter. We have spent three articles on them.

But when we look back at a season of flying, we do not remember the fuel flow. We remember a terrace in Bovec, a ride back in the dusk and a sky full of stars above the wing.
